Have you just bought a new house but still have a bathroom in it that is not to your taste? Or has your current bathroom been around for years and is now very outdated? In short, do you have a bathroom that urgently needs replacing, but not a big budget? It is possible to refurbish a bathroom with little money to make it look like new again. We give you seven handy tips to renovate the bathroom on a minimal budget.

Tip 1: Be critical

First ask yourself whether it is really necessary to renovate the entire bathroom. Especially if you have a smaller budget, it is wise to see if there are still products from the current bathroom that you can keep. Perhaps the sink is still neat, and only the tiles need replacing. Or are the walls still acceptable but the furniture is outdated? A beautiful new bathroom furniture doesn't have to cost that much at all. Discover, for example, Maxaro's Box series. It includes furniture including a washbasin for a soft price of €210. But keeping working, clean items will of course save you the most on costs.

Tip 2: Determine the budget for the new bathroom

This tip seems very obvious, but it often happens that people have second thoughts while refurbishing. Especially if they see other, more expensive products on the internet or in a showroom that suit their preferences even better. So set a clear budget for yourself, at the point when you know exactly what you are going to renovate. Estimate how much everything will cost and how much money you want to spend on it, and build in a buffer for any setbacks. Do not deviate from this plan during the renovation.

Tip 3: Do as much as possible yourself

You probably have handy family members or friends who can help you break out (parts of) the old bathroom. Also, hanging a mirror or bathroom cabinet is generally not difficult. Especially if you have two right hands, this is quite doable. But when determining the budget, keep in mind to hire installers and plumbers. After all, not all jobs can be done by yourself. For example, if you have never laid tiles yourself, it is not wise to suddenly start tiling the entire bathroom. It is better to hire someone for that.

Tip 4: Leave pipes in the same place

Are you planning to renovate a lot of bathroom plumbing? Then check whether you keep the layout of the bathroom the same. After all, this has a big advantage: you don't have to move the pipes, and therefore don't have to break out any tiles. If the pipes are visible during the renovation, it is just as convenient to check them immediately. This way, you minimise the risk of leaks.

Tip 5: New tiles work wonders

If your tiles are broken, or they are really not to your taste, it is time to replace them. Choose to install your new tiles over the old ones to save costs. At Maxaro, you can find beautiful tiles from as little as €9.95 per m². When installing new floor tiles, please bear in mind that the floor will be slightly higher. Therefore, first calculate whether the door can still be opened when the tiles are raised a few centimetres.

Don't like the current tiles, but don't have the budget for a new floor or wall? Then paint a nice new colour over the old tiles. Do take a special paint that can withstand moisture.

Tip 6: Brighten up the bathroom with accessories

Is the renovation still on the expensive side even with these tips? Then try giving the bathroom a totally different look with (small) accessories. For example, hang a large, chic mirror above the basin. This immediately gives the whole bathroom a more luxurious look. Other lighting or a shelf for candles or plants can also give the bathroom a fresh new look.

Tip 7: Think about the future

Finally, a tip that will save you a lot of money not now, but in a while. When renovating the bathroom, also keep an eye on the future, and take this into account when designing the room. Maybe you like having a blue bathroom now, but there is a risk that you will soon get tired of it. Therefore, choose neutral colours so that your bathroom can last for years after renovation. Also useful: a house with a light bathroom is more popular with potential new residents than a different interior. A neutral bathroom will increase the saleability of your house.
