The latest trend in bathrooms? The use of the colour black. It is becoming increasingly popular to furnish the bathroom with black accessories, or even walls and floors. Using dark shades gives a modern look. The colour looks especially nice in large bathrooms with lots of light. This prevents the room from looking very dark and cramped. Nevertheless, it is also possible to use a lot of black in a small bathroom. Read our blog for more inspiration and tips!

Why black in the bathroom?

Most people associate a bathroom with the colour white. Yet black has at least as many advantages. For instance, the colour gives your bathroom interior a sleek look. A room looks a lot calmer if you use the same colour a lot. You can also vary a lot with black. Choose, for instance, a high-gloss finish to give a feeling of luxury. Prefer a tough look? Then go for matt black products, as they give an industrial look.

Another reason to choose this colour is that dirt is less visible on dark colours. On white tiles, you can see everything from dust to limescale. Especially in the bathroom, you like to feel fresh, and black is perfect for that. Of course, this doesn't mean you don't have to clean as often, but it is nice not to see every little spot.

Black accents: a small change with a big effect

Radically changing the whole interior to black is a big step. Not sure if you are ready for that? Then start by adding accessories. Place a black toilet roll holder, choose dark towel hooks or go for pedal bins, soap holders or Toilet brushes. Experiment all you want, because nothing is too crazy. A small intervention but a big effect: a black tap above the basin. Make sure to replace the waste plugs as well. Such a tap with a white basin and silver waste plugs can look a bit messy. Create unity by also installing a black shower valve, for example.

Large objects as eye-catchers

Do you prefer darker colours anyway? Then look into replacing larger objects in your bathroom. Nowadays, more and more black bathroom units, radiators and rain showers are available. Again, you choose whether you prefer a metallic or matt finish. Don't feel like remodelling but want to go with the trend? Then paint a wall in a darker shade, for example, and the room immediately takes on a completely different look. With minimal effort and expense, you can create a real eye-catcher. In a small bathroom, a large, dark surface often visually takes up a lot of space, making the room seem smaller. Avoid this by combining dark objects with glass, for example. A glass walk-in shower with black profile has that tough look, and retains the feeling of space.

Endless combinations of colours and materials

An all-black bathroom is possible, but especially if there is not enough light, it quickly becomes very dark. Small bathrooms in particular will then quickly feel cramped and dark. Fortunately, the colour is very easy to combine with other colours and materials; it goes with almost everything. The most logical choice to combine with black is its opposite: white! The contrast between the colours is bold, but the possibilities are endless. Combine a black floor with a white wall or vice versa, or use two colours of tiles interchangeably. Also possible: black tiles on the floor and walls but all sanitary ware white. Grey also fits perfectly into this colour palette. There are so many options that there is one for everyone's taste.

Black also goes easily with other materials. Freestanding bathroom units, for instance, look perfect in a dark bathroom. There is a wide range of shades of wood. For example, choose oak for a country bathroom, or grey oak if you only want dark shades. Instead, for a modern look, hang lots of mirrors and use chrome taps, shower wall profiles and shower drains. This gives the whole thing a sleek look.

Go wild with colour combinations? Joint the dark shades with your favourite colour! Red or turquoise accents give the bathroom a fresher look and attract attention. Black on the walls and floor ensures the bathroom retains its elegant, luxurious look. So you can go either way with the accessories! The important thing is to choose a bathroom that you will continue to like for the next period. It will soon last around 15 years, so go for a timeless style. This way, you will get the most out of your bathroom!
