With this article, we will help you gain insight into the cost of a bathroom and what you should consider when renovating a bathroom. We will also give you an idea of the different price ranges for bathrooms.

How do you determine the cost?

The cost of bathroom renovation depends on a number of factors such as the choice of materials and style, the size of your bathroom and whether you outsource the work. For a large bathroom with luxury finishes, you will obviously pay more than for a small bathroom with basic elements. The examples below show you the possibilities of different price ranges.

Price examples for new bathrooms

For these price examples, we have assumed a complete new bathroom with dimensions of 2.5x2.5 m. Floor and wall tiles are included.

Basic bathroom
A basic bathroom usually consists of a shower enclosure, vanity units with basin, mirror, radiator, decent taps and a wall-hung toilet. The cost of the sanitaryware is on average €1,550. For the floor and wall tiles, you count about € 750. This amounts to a total price of €2,300 for a quality bathroom with basic elements.

Comfort bathroom
The comfort bathroom is ideal if you value comfort but want to stay within a reasonable budget. This bathroom has a walk-in shower with shower drain, vanity units with basin, mirror cabinet, design radiator, built-in toilet, taps and a freestanding bath including freestanding bath tap. The price of the sanitary ware is around €3,800 and the floor and wall tiles come to €1,200. So you already have a comfort bathroom for as little as €5,000.

Bathroom luxury
If you love luxury and design, then choose a luxury bathroom. In this bathroom type, you will find a spacious shower enclosure with rain shower set, a double unit with countertop basins, Basin taps and a mirror cabinet. There is also room for a design radiator, built-in toilet and freestanding bath including freestanding bath tap. The costs are approximately € 7,800 for the sanitary ware and € 1,700 for the floor and wall tiles. The total price is €9,500.

Additional bathroom remodelling costs

When remodelling your bathroom, not only do you need to purchase sanitary ware, but you also need to consider additional labour costs. Count about 60% for materials, 10% general costs, 10% materials and 20% for labour. Think about demolition, rebuilding and laying new pipes and electrics. For this, you will need professionals. We give you an overview of the main labour costs.

Tip: we recommend setting aside 5% of your budget for unforeseen costs.

Demolishing the bathroom

Demolishing the bathroom takes about half a day to a full day if you have this job done by professionals. The cost fluctuates between €600 and €800. You can also choose to demolish the bathroom yourself. This may take longer, but it will save you a lot of money, but don't forget that you need to provide a container for the demolition waste. This will cost an average of €300.

Water pipes and sewerage

Piping work is carried out by a plumber who charges an average of €60 per hour. Usually, no pipes are moved during a bathroom renovation, unless you want to rearrange the bathroom. However, keeping the current layout is more interesting, as this way no new pipes have to be laid, saving you a few hundred euros.

Count on about half a day's work for two professionals. This amounts to around €750. For this price, all water and sewage pipes are in the right place and neatly concealed in the floor or wall.

Electricity

Installing electricity in the bathroom is usually outsourced to an experienced electrician. If you have a new house, chances are that there are enough sockets and light points in the bathroom and that they comply with the latest regulations. In other cases, the electrician will spend an average of a day getting the electricity in your bathroom up to date. The cost of this is €500.

Plumbing and tile installation

To have the bathroom fully tiled by a tiler, you will pay an average of €42.50 per m². This comes down to a total amount of € 300. Do you also choose to outsource the installation of the plumbing to professionals? Then count on € 1,000 installation costs.

Tips to save when remodelling

Installing plumbing and tiling the bathroom is a big expense that you can save a lot on. Do you have experience in remodelling or know someone handy? Then choose to do the work yourself, so you don't have to pay experienced professionals. You can then use this money for other things.

By demolishing your old bathroom yourself, you will save as much as 10%, when installing the sanitary fittings 25% and when tiling the room 35%. For work on pipes and taps, however, we recommend using a recognised professional.
