Our blog series Maxaro makeover features our customers. Nothing is more fun and inspiring than looking inside someone else's home! This time we take you to Lars and Amanda's house. With a baby on the way, the couple decided to renovate the bathroom last year. The downstairs toilet Amanda and Lars did a year and a half earlier, when they bought the house. Why did they give the bathroom a makeover just before the birth of their son?

The first renovation plans

Initially, the couple wanted to keep the bathroom in their new home. "The bathroom was actually still neat, but just not our style, not our taste." They also had several other things on their list. "A bathroom takes quite a bit of money anyway, so we decided to put that off for a while. The downstairs toilet that really had higher priority. The house was in super good condition, only the toilet and hall were not coming into their own," says Lars. "We tackled those first when we got the key."

For the toilet, their eye immediately fell on a large concrete-look tile, which they spotted in our guest toilet. "Those tiles, actually whole that combination really appealed to us. So we were very quick to decide on the toilet." They chose the same tile in a darker shade for the hallway floor. To create one spatial whole, they decided to continue this floor tile in the toilet.

The bathroom remodelling

Bathroom remodelling took place in May last year. During pregnancy, Amanda missed having a toilet upstairs. "Anyway, it would be handy to have a toilet upstairs for the future. We decided, either we're going to do it now or later when he's here, but then you have more important things on your mind." So in addition to decorating a baby's room, the couple had to start thinking about the bathroom.

Fortunately, they knew pretty quickly what they wanted. A toilet upstairs, of course, but also a spacious shower. And not only they enjoy it these days. There is also enough room for son Mason's bath. "We just put his bath in the shower and we can still reach it ourselves," says Mason.

To create space for showers and toilets, the washer and dryer were moved to the attic. "Those just took up a lot of space. It's also kind of convenient, we have everything to hand in the attic." The bathroom layout otherwise remained pretty much the same. "With the layout, we couldn't do much else with all the wishes we had. This is really the best, the most spacious."

Tile, tile, on the wall

The biggest challenge was choosing the tiles. "We were both pretty much on the same page, like many of the same things, but to finally make the choice, that was a bit of a challenge. Somehow you keep having doubts. After all, the tile does determine the look of the bathroom."

In the end, they fell like a log for our ceramic parquet with herringbone pattern. "We had seen that in the showroom and we just really liked that tile. So we were pretty sure about that. Then we just went looking for concrete effect tiles, we wanted something tough in combination with that wood. We made a selection and kept narrowing it down. At a certain point, we just made up our minds, because we had to choose. We are super happy with what we have now."

Eye-catchers in Lars and Amanda's bathroom

In the couple's bathroom, two elements clearly stand out: the shower and the herringbone tiled floor. "We have a dark shower with a glass shower screen. That glass really enhances the look, it just exudes a lot of luxury! Also, the shower is really spacious, so when you come in you do notice it right away. And of course the floor, you just don't see that much in bathrooms. That's also the first thing you actually see, so those two things together."

Lars' gold tip

"The choice for bathrooms is really huge, above all don't be afraid to make choices," is the gold tip Lars would like to give others. "You always like several things, so you eventually have to make choices. Make sure you don't get lost in those choices." He also believes it is important to carefully map out what you want. "Go over your own wishes carefully. What do you really think is important and is that feasible in the space."
