Dismantling ashower tapis fairly simple. Do you still have the user manual or assembly instructions for the shower tap? Then grab it. Dismantling will probably also work without the instructions, but this will show you exactly the steps. This can be useful when assembling the new shower mixer, once you have finished dismantling the old one.

Dismantling is easy

If you are going to dismantle a shower valve, it is important to do so calmly and carefully. Do not use too much force, put a cloth between the tap and the pliers. Do not pry, as you may damage the tap. Before starting the job, take the pressure off the water supply. This can often be done by closing a stop valve in front of the shower valve to be dismantled. If there is no stopcock, simply turn off the main tap. Take no chances if you are unsure.

The main tap is right in front of the water meter, where the water enters your house. Once the water is off, drain the pipe. You do this by opening the shower valve. Any water still in the pipe will drain out. This avoids any mess while you are busy. Also open the drain valves in your tap water system, if you have them. No dirt or debris should get into the pipe while you are working. Pay attention to this, because we are talking about drinking water and it should be kept clean at all times!

Dismantling shower mixers

For a mixer tap, first pull or unscrew the knob (sometimes there is a locking screw on the side of the knob or under the red or blue plate). Then unscrew the upper part of both taps. With a stop cock, you should unscrew the upper part first. Of course, you then remove the old tap first. With older taps, you sometimes have to saw through the water pipe under the tap. Newer taps are usually equipped with a flexible connection hose that you can simply unscrew. Then unscrew the large nut located right under the tap and you can remove the tap.
