Tilesgive a perfect finish to a wall or floor. And not just in atoiletorbathroom, you can also (partially) tile a corridor, hallway, kitchen or living room. A well-tiled floor or wall looks neat, tidy and clean. Tiles are hygienic because they do not absorb dust. So they are easy to keep clean. The beauty of tiles is also that there are endless colours, motifs and patterns available.

You can tile a bathroom soberly and quietly in one colour, but an exuberant mix is also an idea and will give your bathroom a completely different look. Tiles come in many colours and types, as well as different sizes. From very small to very large, and from square to oblong. Combinations are also possible, so you can make it exactly the way you want it.

Function of the joint

Once the tiled floor has been laid, it still needs to be grouted. The type and size of tile determine the look of a room, but the colour and width of the grout is also important. You might like a narrow joint or a very wide one. But remember that the grout also has a function, which is to prevent dirt and moisture from getting between and behind the tiles. Together with the tile, the grout forms a water barrier in a wet environment. There are different colours of grout available. You can choose one depending on the colour of thefloor tileand your own taste.

Minimum joint width for floor tiles

The minimum joint width for floor tiles is 3 mm, but actually 4 mm is better. At that grout width, the grouting material is nice and neat to work with. Nowadays, rectified tiles(tiles whose sides are sawn straight after firing) are increasingly available. These tiles are often processed with very narrow joints. Joints of 1 to 1.5 mm are no exception. Nevertheless, it is advisable not to make the joints too narrow. For rectified tiles, 2.5 to 3 mm is best.

Floor tile jointing tips

When jointing floor tiles, pay attention to the following points:

  • remember the minimum joint width, 3 but preferably 4 mm
  • use the correct water ratio when preparing the grout
  • the ideal processing temperature is 20º C (minimum 5º C)
  • avoid draughts and high temperatures (maximum 30º C)
  • allow the joints to attract well before sponging them off
  • do not use too much water when sponging.
