A hot tub, also known as a whirlpool, is a luxurious addition to your bathroom. The warm water and the water and air massage let you unwind. To enjoy your whirlpool bath as long as possible, it is important to clean it. This does not have to take a lot of time. In this blog, we explain why you should clean your hot tub properly and how to do it.

What happens if I don't clean my whirlbath?

That it is important to maintain a whirlpool properly is logical. After all, you take a bath to get refreshed, and you can't do that in a dirty whirlpool. Clean your whirlpool properly to avoid the following:

Clogged piping and clogged nozzles

The ring piping and water pump slowly clog up due to caking of bath products and body fats. The fats from these products remain in the pipes and float on the water when you take a bath. The result: dirty particles come out of the jets (flakes) or they don't work at all. This is a huge waste of your whirlpool! Our advice? Do not use soaps or oils, but go for alcohol-based fragrances. Make bathing a party with scents like eucalyptus, lavender and rose. Keep in mind that your skin fats do still end up in the bath. It is therefore necessary to keep the pipes and nozzles properly clean.

Spreading bacteria

Another risk if you do not keep the bath clean properly is the spread of bacteria. Especially in a larger bath where friends and family also bathe at the same time, bacteria thrive. They prefer to be in the pipes behind the nozzles. This is another reason why you should clean the nozzles regularly. This will prevent ailments like nail fungus or intestinal infections. You also reduce the risk of legionella with proper maintenance.

Limey taps

A calcified tap spoils the look of your bath. It simply doesn't look pretty. Also, calcified taps often don't work as well, because it is harder for the water to get out. Maintaining your tap is little work. Further on in this blog, you will read how to keep your taps as beautiful as the day you bought them!

How do I clean my whirlpool?

Are you planning to clean your entire whirlpool soon? This is not much work at all. Follow these three steps and before you know it, the whirlpool will be shining in your bathroom again!

Step 1: Clean the tub

Cleaning the tub is easy. You simply clean the outside with a soft cloth soaked in vinegar or a chlorine-free product. Do not use a scouring pad as this will cause scratches and dull spots. Also clean the inside with a not too aggressive detergent, such as vinegar. Use a soft cloth for this as well.

Step 2: Clean the ring mains

The pipes are often a little trickier to keep clean, as bath products and limescale can build up in the narrow openings of the nozzles. Our tip? Use special whirlpool cleaner. Read here how to clean your whirlpool with Maxaro pipe cleaner:

  • Fill the bath with warm water up to 5 cm above the highest openings of the jets;
  • Joint 50 to 75 ml of whirlpool cleaner to the bath and let all systems run for at least 15 minutes;
  • Let the water stand for an hour. This way, the whirlpool cleaner can soak in and the dirt is properly addressed;
  • Switch on all systems again, this time for 10 minutes;
  • Now drain the bath and rinse well with clean water.

Step 3: Descale the taps

You can easily clean a calcified tap using some kitchen paper/a cloth and some vinegar. This makes lime disappear like nothing else. Soak the paper or cloth in vinegar and wrap it around the tap. Let it soak for a while and then rinse the tap well. Dry it with a clean cloth and your tap is like new again! Above all, do not use a scouring pad, chlorine or bleach. These will damage the shiny layer, making your tap dull. If in doubt about a cleaning product, test it on a non-visible surface first.

How often should I clean my whirlpool?

As you have read, cleaning a whirlpool doesn't take much time at all. The more often you use the whirlpool, the more you will have to clean it. With normal use, around two to three times a week, we recommend the following:

The tub

The tub is best cleaned a few times a week. This doesn't have to take much effort at all. This way, you ensure your bath is clean and stays in top condition.

The loop

It is extremely important that you maintain the nozzles properly to prevent the spread of bacteria and blockages. Therefore, clean the nozzles at least once a month with whirlpool cleaner.

The tap

Cleaning the taps is also quite simple. We recommend cleaning the taps once a week as discussed above. This will keep the taps lime-free and shiny. Lime will not get time to adhere properly with this frequency, so you will never have problems with stubborn limescale.
